Abstract

The essay aims to investigate Canto V of the Inferno, and in particular verse 107: ‘Caïna waits for him who took our life’ (tr. Mandelbaum). This will be done from a stylistic perspective, while the theoretical framework is given by Spitzer’s study on Stimmung (1963). The main purpose is to highlight the strategies adopted – through the mouth of Francesca – regarding one of the founding ideas of Western civilization: that of honour; and, at the same time, to share an original interpretation of the poetic text, as well as (a part) of its cultural meaning.

  • Gandolfo Cascio, Utrecht University

    Gandolfo Cascio is Assistant Professor of Italian Literature and Translation at Utrecht University, where he also leads the research project ‘Observatory on Dante Studies’. His publications include Michelangelo in Parnaso. La ricezione delle “Rime” tra gli scrittori (Marsilio, 2019; English translation: Brill, 2022); Le ore del meriggio. Saggi critici (Il Convivio, 2020; Giuseppe Antonio Borgese Prize); and Dolci detti. Dante, la letteratura e i poeti (Marsilio, 2021; Nino Martoglio Prize). He is currently preparing A Concise Handbook of Literary Reception Studies for Brill.
